The EU states that the aim of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) is to lay down harmonised rules for the marking of construction products in the EU. The Regulation provides a common technical language to assess the performance of construction products. It ensures that reliable information is available to professionals, public authorities, and consumers, so they can compare the performance of products from different manufacturers in different countries.
Power, control and communication cables are the latest products to be included in this Regulation. It will be obligatory for all cables manufactured from 1st July 2017, which have an intended use for permanent installation in buildings or construction works, to have a Declaration of Performance (DoP). This DoP will show the Reaction to Fire performance of the cable with a grade of Class A to F (see table below). The UK has not stipulated what class of product should be used in any type of building, it has been left to the installer or specifier to decide which cable is suitable. Cable that has been placed on the market within the EU prior to July 1st 2017, and is in the stock of a distributor, does not need to be CPR compliant as it can still be used under the previous EU regulations.
All cables manufactured from 1st July 2017 supplied by Goldwing Cable Limited, where applicable, are fully CPR compliant and will be marked and labelled according to the standard BS EN 50575.
It will remain the installer’s responsibility to advise the supplier correctly regarding where the product is being installed and to ensure that the cable purchased is used in accordance with the intended purpose of the cable. There are many cables on the market that are not required to be CPR compliant as their intended use is not in fixed wiring in public buildings, therefore these cables can continue to be supplied as they are not affected by this regulation.
